Windsurfing in Lanzarote, Canary Islands.
Lanzarote is one of the best locations in the world for windsurfing all year round. Since the early 1980’s, windsurfers have flocked here to enjoy the brilliant conditions on offer. Being an island in the Atlantic Ocean, this gives good and consistant windy conditions throughout the year. The best months are from May to September when the island has frequent trade winds making excellent conditions for this sport. For spectators, a well needed breeze keeps the temperature down.
Costa Teguise, located on the east coast of the island, has perfect conditions for windsurfers. The main beach of Las Cucharas hosts a sectioned off area for launching from the beach. There are a number of reputable windsurf schools and shops on and behind this beach where you can rent equipment, book lessons and meet like minded people. The Las Cucharas beach hosts the anuual June PWA World Windsurfing Championship trials which are a real highlight for the area. You can watch the world’s best windsurfers from the harbour point which is near to the reef at the bay entrance.
For the more radical windsurfers, you can also find some great wave conditions from the Jameos Del Agua tourist attraction. This is a 15 minute drive north form Costa Teguise, and is only recommended for the more advanced sailor. There is a rock launch and good volcanic reef providing great waves, giving sailors the chance to pull of some radical moves. The wind blows cross shore and is renowned as the ultimate windsurfing location.
