The Atlantic island of Lanzarote is home to a number of interesting species of birds. The bird population has increased tremendously over the past 50 years as the island itself has developed. As Lanzarote has increased in tourism and general growth so has its gardens, trees and grassed areas, this has provided a welcoming safe haven for a large variety of resident and migrating birds. There are many tracks and paths in the country side and coastal routes of Lanzarote, these give you a great route to explore the island and look out for all the different types of birds.
For birders, Lanzarote can offer if not quantities then definitely some very interesting species. Why not take a tour and explore the island with Lanzarote Active Club to see which species you can discover.
Lanzarote Active Club is equipped with a reliable Landrover, several pairs of binoculars and a camera. They start the day by visiting the first habitat: the desert of Soo, home to the Houbara Bustard, Cream Colored Courser and Stone Curlew. While looking for the most favourite steppary birds, you’ll meet many little surprises on the way. Larches, Finches, Warblers, Hoopoes, Southern Shrikes and occasionally a Kestrel or an Egyptian Vulture which is sure to be a delight your eyes. At this time it is common to meet a shepard with his herd of goats in Soo, normally accompanied with loyal cattle Egrets.
Next you will travel south to the second habitat, the Janubio ́s salt-flats, but not before a refreshing stop in one of the nearby wineries for a drink and perhaps a nice traditional lunch.
In the salt-flats, many wading birds can be observed: there is a steady colony of approximately 60 Black Winged Stilts, 3 pairs of Ruddy Shellducks and Plovers (Kentish, Lesser…), Wimbrels, Redshanks, Stoneturns, occasionally also Spoonbills or Avocets.
This trip is still a pleasant experience even for non birding companions, as you will have the chance to see the diverse volcanic landscape.
Cost: 45 € including transport and binocular rental, duration: 6 hours
