La Graciosa Day Trip

Visiting the charming island of La Graciosa is a “must” when staying on Lanzarote for your holidays. This is an easy and delightful excursion that will allow you to get to know and enjoy the beauty of this little paradise to its fullest.

After being collected from your accommodation, you are driven to the port of Órzola in the north of Lanzarote. (10 minutes from Finca De Arrieta) Depending on the weather you will take either a fast and fun zodiac or a ferry boat to cross to the port of Caleta de Sebo, the only village in La Graciosa with approximately 500 inhabitants, most of them being fishermen. The walk on the east coast will take you through landscapes of dunes and lava flows, erosion canyons and tucked away beaches. The walk itself is easy, however due to the terrain it is necessary to wear good closed walking shoes. After approximately 1.5 hours (if you don’t stop for a dip in one of the beaches before), you’ll arrive to what used to be the original settlement, Pedro Barba, with approximately 15 houses. This village has no steady residents any longer but the houses were restored and they are occasionally used as holiday homes. Pedro Barba is completely empty most of the year, but nicely kept and the houses conserved the peculiar architecture of original Graciosa homes. You will also find there a lovely beach of golden sand, with the opportunity to relax, swim and snorkel.

After this refreshing break, you will get into a jeep to explore the rest of the island. More stunning beaches, volcanoes, arches created by lava flows and amazing ocean views everywhere.

Around 15:00 p.m. you jeep will drop you back to Caleta de Sebo, where you ́ll sit in a restaurant overlooking the harbor for a nice traditional fresh fish lunch. After that you ́ll have just about time to visit the charming church and stroll a little through the sand covered streets before you take the boat back to Lanzarote.

Cost: Adults – 69 € Children under 12 yrs – 49€, including transport, boat, jeep safari and a full 3 course lunch with beverages, duration: full day, walking distance: 4 km

Walking and Trekking Lanzarote

Lanzarote offers a perfect terrain for walking and trekking, and is becoming a very popular pastime here on the island. Being one of the most raw and rugged of the volcanic Canary Islands, Lanzarote offers a huge range of walks with stunning scenery ideal for all ages and abilities.

There is a large array of wildlife and indigenous plants to spot on your travels along with spectacular views and well-kept paths. The government has just added some new sign posted routes along some of the animal tracks. These signs show detailed information of each walk including heights and distance between each point.

At Lanzarote Retreats our favourite local walk starts at  Finca De Arrieta and takes you up to the village of Haria (approx 3.30 to 4 hours round trip). Press this link for instructions “Haria Walk”

Costa Teguise also offers a variety of walks called “Red de Paseos” They offer 3 walk’s from 5km up to 10km. They are a great way to oriente yourself with Costa Teguise and its surrounding countryside. The walks all pass by the sea front promenade and up through to the volcanic landscape behind the resort.

Guided Walks: We can highly recommend booking a guided walk with Blackstone treks&tours. We found Jose to be highly professional and informative during our recent sunset walk around the Timanfaya national park. Our retreat guests can book a tour via our onsite office, or to Contact Jose directly please click this link.

Independent Walks: If you are looking to visit Lanzarote for an independent walking holiday then its worthwhile investing in a booked called “Walk Lanzarote” by the Discovery Walking Guides. This book has 35 different walks covering all of the island, and its details and descriptions are very informative.

What to take: Don’t forget to be well prepared for your walk. Carry a rucksack 25-30ltr should be sufficient. Make sure you have sun cream, sun glasses, a hat, medical kit, lightweight jacket and plenty of water. Walk from Arrieta to Haria

Lanzarote Retreat’s favourite walk starts at the eco retreat Finca De Arrieta and takes you up to the village of Haria (approx 3.30 to 4 hours round trip).

If you take the road up towards Tabayesco and take the first right turn when you reach the village then continue it turns into a dirt track. This track takes you along the valley of Temisa where you can see a number of small holdings and spectacular views to the sea. If you bare right the track adopts a past donkey trail which meanders up hill right to the top of Haria. You need to cross the road and follow this route into the village of Haria. If you walk on a Saturday morning you will be able to wander through the artisan market offering local breads, arts/crafts and souvenirs). You can get a lovely lunch at the sociedad which is on the market square. Here you can experience Canarian tapas and lovely Lanzarote wines whilst dining in a quaint dining room.

From Haria you can either head back along the route you came or head out from Haria towards Arrieta. As you leave and pass  the last houses you will see a cemetery on your right, take the road here and this leads on to  a dirt track. Follow this track until you can see the retreat Finca De Arrieta, then drop down from the mountain back to the retreat.
