Take a tour of Finca de Arrieta, our Eco Retreat on You Tube,  please note this was filmed "winter" 2009/2010.

Finca de Arrieta

Most of our eco properties – the Eco Yurts, Eco Garden Cottage,  Eco Barn, Eco Tower and Eco Luxury Villa – are situated on the beautiful 30,000-metre estate, Finca de Arrieta, which is also the site of our family home. Originally farming land, it has been lovingly transformed into a rural idyll, featuring mature exotic gardens, including mango, banana, guava and lime trees, animal enclosures and a play area – all partly walled in stone found on the finca. For more information on yurts, visit our What is a yurt? page.

Guests have shared use of a solar-heated 10-metre lap pool and plunge pool, as well as a chill-out area with shaded Polynesian-style daybed – all in a gated mature garden setting with sea and mountain views. Here you’ll also find a spacious covered open room with hardwood floor for guests’ use. There is a large, fully equipped kitchen, dining space for eight, authentic Moroccan floor seating, WIFI access and a further toilet and shower room. It’s the perfect place to relax, read or enjoy a meal.

For convenience there is an onsite honesty shop in the room underneath the Eco Tower. The shop offers goods such as, Milk, Pasta, Charcoal, Washing Powder and Local Products including a selection of locally produced wines.

Lanzarote Retreats has ten ecological properties and we’re very proud of our green credentials. All are off the national grid, giving guests the opportunity to enjoy a sustainable holiday, experiencing first-hand what it’s like living with solar panels, wind turbines and using the latest renewable energy technology, which makes the most of our wonderful Lanzarote weather. You’ll be surprised at the luxury of our accommodation.

The Location

Just 30 kilometres from the capital Arrecife, with its airport and ferry terminal, Finca de Arrieta remains an off-the-beaten-track location – the perfect setting for a relaxing, peaceful holiday in the Canarian countryside with the bonus of being near the beach.

The Village of Arrieta is within walking distance from the retreat but is via a farm track which is not ideal for buggies or walking in the dark, so we always recommend car hire (therefore a 2 minute drive).

This is a wonderful place to experience the true Lanzarote lifestyle. The village is an authentic Canarian fishing village with a beautiful sandy beach, where you’ll find good-value seafront tapas bars and restaurants, supermarkets, shops and a bakery.

Eco Credentials

All our eco properties except one – the Eco Fisherman’s Cottage – are situated on our rural retreat, Finca De Arrieta. The whole estate runs on a 48-volt system, the largest on Lanzarote, which efficiently powers the ten eco-friendly dwellings on-site, including our family home. For more detailed eco information, visit our Eco Q&A page.

Guests are free to help themselves to the daily supply of eggs from our free-range hens..

Guest services, events and facilities

If you’re staying at Finca de Arrieta you can take advantage of various optional extras, some of which are free while others will attract a small charge. These can be arranged when booking or on arrival, but to avoid disappointment, please enquire about our added extras with as much notice as possible.

Supplementary services: cleaning, beach towel hire, babysitting, local produce grocery boxes and private transfers to and from the airport.

Excursions: We also organise evenings in local restaurants and days trips to La Graciosa, the smallest inhabited island in the Canaries. Visit our Days Out, Sports and Activities for further information.

Excursions and activities with preferred partners: Our guests can benefit from discounts and special deals with a number of preferred partners, including aromatherapy massage treatments, surf and body board lessons, road and mountain bike hire and luxury catamaran sailing trips. Spend a day on the ocean on a private yacht charter, explore the island on organised walking trips or try your hand at kayaking.  Visit our Days Out, Sports and Activities page for further information.

Additional guest facilities at the finca

Children: Our dedicated kids’ area includes a play park, sunken trampoline, wooden "pirate" boat and our resident donkey Mollie. Children also love to visit our other animals and collect eggs from the free range chickens. We also have a table tennis table, learner surf boards, body boards, toys and beach toys, which guests are welcome to use.

Family Friendly

1 Lanzarote Retreats is a family-run business. We (Michelle and Tila) have four children of our own, so we understand the needs of families on holiday.

2. We want to provide a comfortable, safe environment for children of all ages. All properties have family-friendly features and we can provide a range of baby or toddler equipment on request. Click on Facilities for details of special family features or just ask if there’s something missing.

3. Just minutes from a broad, sandy beach, with shallow water, our finca features a gated pool. We also have a table tennis table, learner surf boards, body boards, toys and beach toys, for guests' use.

4. We have a dedicated kids’ area, including a play park, sunken trampoline and our resident donkey Mollie. Children also love visiting our other animals, including our many chickens and collecting fresh eggs.

5. And, finally… we don’t just look after the kids – we take care of you too. We can organise excursions, sporting activities and pampering for parents – why not treat mum to a massage or let dad ride the waves!

Local area, facilities and services

The area around Finca de Arrieta is stunningly beautiful and a chance for you to see the "real Lanzarote". The coastal, fishing village of Arrieta has been left unchanged and unspoilt and feels like stepping back in time. The village is a 10 minute walk from the Finca along a farm track and via an under-road tunnel, not ideally suitable for families with pushchairs or small children. The village is a 2 minute drive away. Due to the rural location of Finca de Arrieta, there is no street lighting at night.

There is a small sandy beach just 200 metres from the retreat and a main beach with beach bar, restaurant and toilets at the end of the village. There are a number of fantastic sea front fish restaurants, tapas bars and coffee shops. The village also has a  supermarket, a variety of shops, petrol station and diving school.

The mountain Village of Haria is just a short drive away. Known as "The Valley of a Thousand Palms", the town has a spectacular location and the views out to the ocean are breathtaking. Every Saturday morning, there is an artisan market, visit our Local Markets page for more information.

There are a number of golden sandy beaches on the way up north to the fishing village of Orzola. From here, there is a local ferry over to the neighboring island of La Graciosa. For more information on how to visit La Graciosa, visit our Days Out, Sports and Activities page.

Due to its rural location, there are some fantastic walking/cycling trails from the village along the coast, either north to the neighbouring village of Punta Mujeres or south to Mala village or Guatiza, home to the famous Cactus Garden.

The northerly region of Lanzarote is fantastic for walking, mountain biking, swimming, surfing, windsurfing, road cycling, hand and paragliding, fishing and bird watching.

There is also a gym in the nearby village of Arrieta.

Further afield

Within a short drive from Finca de Arrieta, you will be able to experience the beauty  and tranquility of northern Lanzarote.

The tropical bird park in Guinate with its wide variety of animals, birds and plants is very popular with families. The atmospheric caves and lava caverns of Jameos del Agua and Cuevas de los Verdes are both amazing and unique examples of the work of Cesar Manrique. The viewpoint at Mirador del Rio, looking out over the island of La Graciosa, is a perfect spot to get away from it all, be still and reflect.

There are so many beautiful places to visit on the island so here are a few that come highly recommended and are well worth a visit:

“ We had five days in the yurt royale ...lots of baths outside, and lounging on the comfy day bed and inside our super posh yurt.....very peaceful and romantic, and the local town and beach were fab...good food and unspoilt.... we will be back! the team were also very helpful and kind to us.... ”

- amelia troubridge, December 2011

“ We returned from 3 days in the Yurt Royale and had a great holiday. The Yurt is fabulous and the car hire is a great addition. It was great for our family although my son is still at the pebble-eating stage so really couldn't be trusted with the gardens! The day-bed, candles and radio provided made for a really relaxed evening when our baby was asleep. The cats, chickens and dog were great successes and provided hours of entertainment! The paella night was great and a good chance to meet other visitors and owners.

The honesty shop is a fantastic idea as we arrived late in the evening but we were still able to have a fresh breakfast before heading off to village to buy supplies. I recommend using the dinner service from Brown's deli as the food was superb and easy to arrange.
In conclusion, this is a great holiday resort and there are so many different accommodations to choose from, that I think there is something for everyone. The area is great and I hope we will return. So unusual and nicely done. ”

- Rachel and family, November 2011

“ This is our second stay at the Finca De Arrieta. The Eco Yurt Royale was gorgeous. The beds are big and super comfy. The outside area feels very private and the daybed and outdoor bath felt really luxurious. My 2 year old daughter loved having outdoor baths - particularly when mum or dad jumped in with her!

When little one had gone to bed we loved eating in the raised dining area at night and looking out towards the sea view + we probably indulged in a little too many bottles of wine spurred on by the seeming limitless supply in our honesty wine rack.

It is a great retreat for young children with so much to do. Our daughter loves collecting eggs in the morning, and thoroughly enjoyed a ride on Molly the donkey. All the toys around the pool area and in the yoga area are great for kids to play with and mean that you don't have to cart loads of toys from home.

The onsite honesty shop is great if you've forgotten to pick up any essentials and the pool area is great for kids and adults. We didn't swim in the pool in January because it was a little too cold but it was great this time in September. Our daughter especially loved the little pool because she could stand up.

We love going to the Lagoon near Orzola because its like a natural swimming pool and great for little ones learning to swim because they're not constantly being knocked over by waves + gave us lots of opportunities to watch the fish and collect little crabs.

We also love Famara beach for surfing + El Risko, Famara restaurant for their tuna carpaccio!

Sally, Michelle and Tila couldn't offer a more hospitable welcome. You really don't feel like anything is too much trouble for them. That on top of gorgeous eco accommodation and year round sun - we'll definitely be back.

”

- Sara, Rob & Jemima, October 2011

“ This property was above and beyond our excited expectations. It was complete luxury to the max with a perfect relaxed, helpful vibe in the grounds. The staff were totally amazing and the area of our Yurt completely private so we felt tremendously relaxed by the time we got home. It was a complete haven for our toddler who is still talking about the animals. The beach close by was very clean , relaxed and safe and the local eateries fab. We also did the Finca family BBQ on the monday - yummy and my husband went out on Tila surf trip which was also great. 100% recommended. We are just trying to work out when we can get back!
”

- Sigi Colquhoun, May 2011

“ The six days we spent at Finca de Arrieta were just superb. The Eco Yurt Royale was fabulous and even more glamourous than it looks in the photographs. If you are looking to treat yourselves to somewhere special, do it, its worth it. Everything is extremely comfortable. We relaxed straightaway and that's how we stayed. No pressures, everything we needed to hand, Michelle, Tila and their back up team have been very thoughtful in what is supplied. Sally was lovely, so friendly and helpful. We loved the outside living, even when it was raining and a bit windy, sitting on the comfy sofa, reading, chatting, drinking, eating but still out in the fresh air, just wonderful - you were right Sally it really is "glamping".

We met some of the other guests, everyone so friendly and enjoying themselves, the place just leans to it. We were there on our own and enjoyed the peace and quiet but so enjoyed seeing the children around having such a good time and will certainly consider returning either with friends or family, would love to bring the grandchildren, they would have a ball.

We needed the car (I have a dodgy knee) but did manage to walk down to the beach, although we had to cross the road as the underpass path is vey low to bend down to get through. It was not a problem but it is not recommend that you walk back up the road at night. Wind up torch supplied, which you would also need if you wanted to go to out to the bathroom at night, but there were the moon and stars to guide you too, not to mention the solar lights, it was lovely, take a constellation map with you, you could lose some sleep sitting out there studying the stars (mind you I am sure "the team" would have come up with one if I had asked.)

To sum up - if you are thinking about going, book it, you will have a relaxed, great time, whether as a family or a couple. ”
